🇩🇪 Jet Lag Day in Munich: Walk, Eat, Drink. Repeat.

Grüß Gott, Munich!

It’s zombie day, aka jet lag day in Munich. You gotta pay the travel tax. Trying to stay awake until after dinner. Right after dinner.

In advance of a trip to the Baltic States, we’re in Munich for a couple of days to visit lifelong family friends. And eat. And drink. First order of business: leberkäse semmel (basically, German meatloaf on bread). And a beer.

Low level turbulence for the whole flight. Feel kind of like I’ve been in a blender set to “chop” for 8 hours. Still, I don’t feel like complete hot garbage right now, so I must have slept a little on the plane. I’m never really sure.

Checked in to the hotel, took a quick shower to wash the plane germs off, then walking. Because if I stop moving, it’s curtains for me.

Viktualienmarkt

Walked over to the Viktualienmarkt, which is the famous open air market and beer garden here in Munich. A whole stand of nothing but strawberries and white asparagus. So tempting, but I’m on a mission. Got my leberkäse semmel and a beer, and sat in the beer garden. Sooo good.

But I gotta keep moving.

Found the most incredible looking radis (the large white radishes) at the market. Need to find someone who sells them sliced and salted. Then we’ll be in business.

It’s trying to be Spring here in Germany, but still pretty cool and windy outside.

Sidebar: in Germany, you can buy an over the counter medication that is a combination of Ibuprofen and Tylenol in one pill. Genius. (Have since learned that we can buy this in the US, too, but my German pills are better. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.)

More walking. Aimless walking. Really just trying to keep ourselves awake.

Had a super early dinner, because everyone is fading fast. Got my käse spätzle (German mac & cheese) fix before nodding off in my beer.

Walked by the famous Hofbrauhaus. Did not go inside. Because there are far better places to have a beer in Munich than the HBH.

Cannot fight the jet lag anymore. More tomorrow. Gute Nacht.

  1. Now you have me hungry…..no leberkase semmel in the fridge….rats!

    1. I could make that happen for you . . . there’s a German deli in Falls Church that has fresh leberkase. 😎

  2. Munich was fun! We did the traditional things. Some soccer tournament was going on so it was extra crazy there. Is that where they say Grus Got? I loved how the greeting changed where you were in Germany!

    1. Yes, Gruss Gott is the traditional Bavarian greeting. I’ll bet a soccer tournament added some extra “fun”!

  3. Since I lived in southern Germany for four years at the end of WWII and returned on business many times later – know Munchen well 🙂 ! Probably my favourite city in the country! You took some very good photos in spite of the time of day seeming all wrong . . , of course the food ones are the smiliest 🙂 ! Love the Leberkase ‘taking over’ the bun !!! Jealous of the white asparagus which is not well-known in Australia . . . and am smiling about ‘Gruss Gott’ . . .

    1. All the Bavarians were super excited about the Spargel. It was on every menu in every restaurant!
