🇪🇸 A Sherry-Fueled Day at Las Loberuelas: Spanish Partridge, Sun, and Surprises

The shooters are shooting today. I will be not-shooting. And drinking sherry.

Surprise

Surprise/not surprise: our 19th century house has 19th century plumbing. No hot water this am. Nope. No shower for me. It’s gonna be a greasy hair don’t care day!

We are at the traditional Spanish shooting estate, Las Loboruelas today, shooting (hunting) Spanish red-leg partridge. Beautiful birds. The estate has some sort of connection to the Lustau Family – of sherry fame. After every shooting drive, we stop for drinks. I am powered by sherry and (huzzah!) Fanta Limón today.

Ken’s secretario David, (kind of like a spotter/assistant in the field) speaks no English, so I am being brave and stepping the hell up. Whole sentences of Español are coming out of my mouth today. They are the sentences of a three year old, but I’m trying.

Spanish Sunshine

Sun is OUT today. ☀️☀️ David worried about my blanca skin and the strong sun, so I am wearing my jaunty Euro scarf around my head and neck as sunscreen. This seemed to satisfy David.

I come into the field with the shooters mostly because I love to watch the dogs work. Well, that and the Sherry breaks. Am in love with David’s springer spaniel, Mantecado (named after a Spanish Christmas cookie). The other dogs were a whole pack of white Labradors, which made me miss our white Lab pup, Jack. Accordingly, we are now calling them, “the pack of Jacks”.

After the shooters wrapped up for the day, we had a full lunch (at 6pm) right in the field. Plus more delicious sherry. But it got COLD fast when that sun went down.

Good news! The hot water situation at the house is fixed. And I took a shower that can only be described as glorious.

Ladies are heading to Córdoba tomorrow to explore. And shop. Because I still have souvenir room in my suitcase, and we can’t have that.

Salud!

  1. Beautiful photos! I have nought against ‘shooting for the pot’ and, as I am certain all the shot birds end up there, look at your photos with interest. Actually, my day’s favourite is the one of the spaniel with the partridge in his mouth. Wonder how the dogs are taught to do what they do and not ‘muck up’ in the process!
