We are joining our good friends, Delaney & Sons, and the rest of our squad, for another driven shooting trip in the UK. Ken will be shooting. And, once again, I will be *not* shooting. But first, a couple of days in London to acclimate. The older I get, the more acclimate time I need.
Slept for 72 minutes on the plane, so feel like tired garbage. But gotta keep moving. Alright, Zombie Day . . . let’s do this.
We are staying at the historic Caledonian Club – right across-ish from Buckingham Palace. It was founded in 1891 as a sort of safe space for Scottish Nationals to hang out in London. I am 7% Scottish so I am allowed to stay here.
Found a great pub near our hotel for lunch – The Grenadier. Had delicious cider and Scotch eggs. It’s supposed to be haunted by a young soldier named Cedric. He was caught cheating at cards and subsequently put to death. Harsh. Visitors hang money from the ceiling in an attempt to pay his debt. Did not hang any money. Did not see Cedric. Kinda bummed.
Yesterday and today, much of the UK has been pounded by a bomb cyclone storm named Ciarán. Pretty tame by Atlantic hurricane standards, but some pretty good rain and wind this afternoon that kept turning my umbrella inside out.
Had to pee, so ducked into Harrod’s. Tried to walk through their Hall of Perfume. Waaaay too many people. And most of them were trying to spray perfume on me. I love a good perfume, but there are boundaries. Tried to avoid eye contact, but got sprayed with one perfume that made me smell like a 90 year old woman. Will be scrubbing this off for the next 3 days.
There’s a dress code at the Caledonian Club. Coat and tie for men and something approaching cocktail hour for women. Good thing I always pack an emergency ball gown.
Brilliant gin and tonic at the Caledonian tonight. A Scottish gin called Harris. Bartender was named Jim. He and all four of his sons work here.
Jim got me to try something called marmite (British brown goo made from what’s leftover after beer is brewed) pretzels tonight. 0/10. Do not recommend.
Fading fast. Cheers!
