The Snow Hotel, Kirkenes, Norway 🇳🇴

Bonus Post: The Snowhotel.

Arrived late last night, which was totally fine with me – minimized my time in the ice room. The experience started with a stop at the ice bar for shots of Rudolph’s Revenge – vodka and reindeer blood (cloudberry juice), served in shot glasses made out of ice. I made sure to lick my lips first – because I watched A Christmas Story.

Then the lowdown on what to wear – merino wool from top to bottom, heavy wool socks, and a balaclava for your head. And how to wrangle the polar sleeping bags. There is no way to look cool doing this.

All of the ice rooms have themes. Ken wanted the Viking warlord room. Or even the polar bordello. We got the Disney Princess Frozen room. We are now both in touch with our inner Elsas. Let it go! Let it gooooo!

Except for the 2cm of my nose that was exposed, I wasn’t *that* cold, but I wasn’t comfortable, either. The heavy mummy-shaped polar sleeping bag isn’t great for claustrophobic people. And you can’t read before bed because you don’t want your arms exposed to the cold. So I never relaxed enough to get any sleep. That, and Elsa kept staring at me all night, and it freaked me out.

I put my phone in my sleeping bag with me so my battery wouldn’t drain. What I needed is one of these Nordic puffer jackets for your phone!

So the big answer: There is a heated communal bathroom, but it’s down a very long snow and ice tunnel, which is even longer and snowier when you’re making the sprint at 3:30am. I recommend wearing shoes.

Honestly the most annoying thing about the whole experience is having to store all of your luggage in a big communal room. And trying to figure out where I put my woolies, while my suitcase is exploding everywhere.

Well, I made it through the night. Which is more than I can say for the guests we heard bailing out at 2am. Overall, it was a cool (you see what I did there?) experience – that I will never do again. Bucket list ✅.

Tonight we get to sleep in a beautiful heated cabin.
