Nîmes, Uzés and Pont-du-Gard 🇫🇷

Sunday is Ken’s favorite day in Europe, because all the stores are closed, and I can’t buy anything.

Spectacular day trip today to the ancient Roman town of Nîmes. Visited the Roman Arena, which was built in 70AD. Romans must have had long legs, because these were some steeeeep stairs. Made it to the top, though. All I could think, looking down into the arena, was Russell Crowe: “Are you not entertained??”

Got tired from climbing all the stairs, and stopped at a cafe for a coffee/Coke. I love that you can just plop down at a cafe in Europe and order a beverage. Nothing else.

Walked by the Temple of Diana, which is considered the best preserved temple of the Roman world. Great lines and angles for pics!

Today is May Day in Europe, and it is traditional in France to give sprigs of lily of the valley as a symbol of luck and prosperity for the coming year. Mom and I got in on that tradition.

We also managed to walk right into the middle of a good European protest. I don’t think we have ever had trip to Europe that didn’t feature some kind of protest situation. Pretty sure this one had something to do with the labor party, it being May Day and all.

Sidebar: Have decided I am not meant to speak French, or try to speak French. I think you have to be a native speaker to understand when you do or do not pronounce certain letters of certain French words. As near as I can tell, the final ‘S’ in French words is decorative, except on Tuesdays.

Had a lovely lunch in Uzés.

Made a quick stop at the awe-inspiring Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct/bridge built in the first century AD, without the use of mortar. Yep, that’s all stone cutting skill and physics. Insane.

Back at the apartment now, where I’m about to eat this meringue that’s as big as my head. If I’m gonna eat pure sugar, I’m going big.
