Anna and I are both fighting some version of travelers ick. Her version is ickier than mine (keep reading). A sick day(s) abroad is something no one wants to deal with on vacation. It’s actually something I worry about more than I should. And now, it’s showtime.
Took the shuttle into the town of Palma – and walked off the bus straight into 102 degrees. ![]()
Ugh.
Thought about going inside the cathedral, but that would have involved climbing a shit-ton of stairs in this inferno. Hard pass. Will look at pretty pictures of the inside of the cathedral on the Google machine later.
Found Fanta lemon (yay) and thought it might help the nausea. It didn’t. Looked at some street art. Pretty sure the paint is melting off the paper.
Tried to shop for the famous Majorca pearls. Still nauseous.
Can’t really focus. Ended up buying us these matching pearl rings as a remembrance of our fabulous day in Mallorca. I hope we still like them when we feel better.
Uncle! The Ick Wins
Decided to surrender and head back to the ship. And we almost made it. Poor Anna puked all over the port lobby. I found someone and asked for paper towels and a plastic bag – EN ESPAÑOL. In an emergency situation, my Spanish skills are impeccable. Got Anna and the port floor cleaned up, and retreated to our air conditioned room for siesta.
Back at the ship and Anna can’t keep anything down. (I have gone into “mom mode”, so am suddenly “better”.) Anna’s resting pulse was really elevated (thanks, Aura ring), so worried about dehydration. I ended up taking Anna down to the ship’s medical. How many people can say they’ve been to a cruise ship’s medical? Putting this on our bucket list just so we can cross it off. Good times.
Wonderful doctor from South Africa immediately gave Anna IV fluids and some anti-nausea meds (photo posted with Anna’s permission). Cruise ships take any gastro illness very seriously – so the bummer is – we have to isolate for 24 hours. So, we’ll be spending some quality time in our room. Thank God we’ve got a balcony. And room service.
Stay tuned.

Travel date: June 15, 2025

Oh my. How awful. But the photos are beautiful!
Stay tuned . . . it gets worse.
Oh dear, this part of an adventure no one wants!
I guess it’s bound to happen if you travel a lot, but man . . . not fun! Cheers!!
Ugh. It happens though. Just one of those interruptions to travel that crop up now and again. Fennel tea is my go to natural remedy. Really works, but you have to time it right.
Oh no! My husband and I both had a “bug” on our river cruise earlier this year. First time in all of our travels. Definitely not fun! Hope the IV and meds work quickly for Anna and you get better as well.
I guess if you travel a lot (and we do), this is bound to happen. Unfortunately, this particular ick had some serious staying power.
Someone recommended activated charcoal, too. IDK, this particular ick was an especially nasty (and long lasting) one. Zero fun.
So didn’t they have group rates on IV fluids?
Hahaha. I wasn’t sick “enough” to warrant IV fluids. Anna had it soooo much worse than me!
The very best to Anna and you! Surprised the ship’s doc is allowed to do IVs but it will assuredly help! No use complaining about the unnecessary loss of holiday fun time – but here is sincere hoping things will be better soonest. Fingers and toes crossed.!
Oh, no! I hope you get/got well! Never fun or good to be sick on a trip. It just feels exponentially worse. I hope all is well, and your next vacation will more than make up for feeling under the weather, to say the least! 🌟
Anna and I discussed needing another trip to Barcelona as a “make-up” for this one! Although, if we do that, it’ll be in the OFF OFF season!! Cheers!
