Day 2 – On the Road to Williston, North Dakota. 🇺🇸
North today!
Deadwood, South Dakota
First stop: Deadwood, SD. Have you seen the HBO show? Outstanding television. Ken is trying out all of his inappropriate Al Swearingen dialog.
Mount Moriah Cemetery
Detour to Mount Moriah Cemetery. I love old cemeteries. Saw the graves of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane. Seth Bullock wanted to be buried at the very *top* of the cemetery, so he could look out over Deadwood. Getting up there involved scaling a small mountain. After questioning my life choices a couple of times, I made it to the top. Seth has some great views up there.
I’m sure Deadwood was once a charming, little western town. Now? It’s a town made for, and supported by, tourists. Didn’t see anything particularly charming.
Belle Fourche
Stopped for about 3 minutes at the geographic center of the United States in Belle Fourche, SD. Plaque said this has been the center of the US since the addition of Alaska in 1959. Not sure this is as much the *actual* center as it was someone’s idea of a good place to put a plaque. Ken: “This might be the dumbest thing we’ve stopped for yet.”
Onward!
New state – North Dakota!
Ken would like you to know that ND is state #49 for him (#48 for me) and he is now, “leader in the clubhouse and champion of the known world”. I’m letting him have his little moment.
Teddy Roosevelt NP
Stopped for a quick, but ass-kicker of a hike at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Very beautiful, very peaceful. I was hoping to see bison or wild horses. I saw massive piles of bison
, and a plague of grasshoppers.
Saw a ton of amber fields of grain today. And a shocking amount of oil digging/fracking.
Arrived for overnight in Williston, ND. Found the local watering hole. Had BBQ (decent, but let’s not pretend anyone does BBQ better than the South).
Our AirBnb came with a lovable purr-cat named Tux. He was rescued from the oil pipeline up here. And I’m in love with him. ![]()
Critter count: 1 herd of bison
, 4 wild horses
, 48 antelope, a plague of grasshoppers, and 1 dead elk. ![]()
And Tux. ❤️

Cheers!
