Antigua, Guatemala 🇬🇹

Super exciting moment this morning: we got to see one of Antigua’s volcanoes erupting! The locals call it “coughing”. They didn’t seem that excited about it. But did I mention I saw a volcano erupting?!?

The national bird of Guatemala is the “resplendent quetzal”. I am in love with this bird. Unfortunately, they are relatively rare, and only live in the high elevation cloud forests, so I have about a zero percent chance of seeing one in Antigua. Disappointment. Will *buy*all the quetzal things, instead.

Watched this adorable little girl chase pigeons in the town square. We all reminisced about when our kids were young enough to want chase pigeons. And then Jo actually chased pigeons.

Saw the hippest hipster in all of Guatemala. Wondered/secretly hoped he’d be a wedding guest.

Had delicious margaritas at lunch. There may have also been tequila shots.

Walked through the Cathedral of San Jose. Noticed absolute *piles* of fresh fruits being left in front of holy relics. Apparently, the fruits are offerings to the saints in advance of Holy Week festivities, which kick off here on Sunday. Wondered what happens to all the fruit after the saints have accepted their offerings.

Finally got a couple of photos of the famous and outrageously colorful Guatemalan chicken busses. Called such because you may or may not be sharing your seat with a live chicken. Have not ridden one. I wouldn’t mind sitting next to a chicken, but I’m not a fan of sitting next to chicken poop.

Did a lot of shopping today – have now purchased pretty much *all* of Guatemala. Ken is thrilled.

Rehearsal reception tonight. Beautiful venue, outstanding food and drinks. Got to try Quetzalteca, the national spirit of Guatemala. Distilled from sugarcane, it’s commonly mixed with lemonade. Super delicious. Had next level tacos with tortillas made from scratch. Learned that pineapple is superb on tacos. And then I remembered why I don’t eat pineapple. ❤️🔥

Buenas Noches!
