Bavaria ordered perfect weather for us to enjoy the day in Munich. ![]()
Slept on and off and on and off and on and off for 11 hours. Much needed, if broken, sleep.
Traditional Bavarian Breakfast
Breakfast bar at the hotel had a traditional Bavarian breakfast – Weißwurst and pretzels, so started the day happy!
Walking around Munich
Walked around Munich a bit this am while Dad took care of some business at his Deutschland bank.
Bought Ken a gorgeous Bavarian janker (jacket). We will look like a proper Bavarian family at dinner tonight. And of *course* I found a cigar and whiskey shop. Get this – they sell Bavarian whiskey – tasted it – excellent. A bottle or two of this will find its way into my suitcase.
Homecoming at the Haupt
Met family friends for lunch at the Hauptschutzengesellschaft München, the 600 year old shooting club where my dad trained when he and mom lived here in the 60s. Have been coming here since I was a child. Always a homecoming to visit with my dad. Was expecting to meet 2-4 people for lunch. 17 people showed up. Minimal English. I did a lot of smiling and nodding. But what a wonderful experience to share a meal together in a place so special to our family.
Pro Tip: If you ever find yourself in Munich, take the S-Bahn to Mittersendling and walk to the Haupt. They have one of the most beautiful biergartens in Munich – the Augustiner Schützengarten.
Sidebar: Was told several times today that I look exactly like my mom. I only cried once. Highest of compliments. ![]()
Navigated the German S-Bahn to and from the Haupt without a single mistake. Pretty sure that makes me German now.
Back to the hotel to observe German siesta. The Germans don’t really have this tradition, so I am starting one.
No Fanta Lemon yet, but am enjoying the hell out of this Apfelschorle (sparkling apple juice). Still waiting for this to take off in the US.
Dinner to Remember
Met more family friends for an incredible dinner tonight at Restaurant Huber. Shocked this chef doesn’t have a Michelin star. Yet. Five courses with wine pairings. I need to move to Germany so I can drink all the wine they don’t export. Wow.
Closed out the night with some wonderful Birne (pear) schnaps.
A wunderbar day!!

Oh how wonderful!!! Love the jacket!
Are you sure you spelled Hauptschutzengesellschaft correctly? I always thought it had one more vowel…another “e” I think.
Hahaha. The Germans: not overly fond of the space bar, either!
You made me hungry!

Well, the sun smiled on this plethora of friendly locals, food and drinks! So glad you enjoyed your second home even tho’ your body must still have wondered about the time you told it it was:) ! The long, long, long names . . . if you divide such into meaningful words and just forget about a thing called a ‘spacebar’ they are pretty manageable:) ! (Have not forgotten about Estonian bread recipes . . . local matters have just taken over the time . . . )
Thanks, Eha. No rush on the recipes. Cheers!
