A Warm Day in Salzburg: Castles, Café Culture, Schnaps & a Mozart Encounter

Exploring Salzburg today, and it’s kinda warm! 😓 Unanticipated sweating.

But First, Breakfast

Cafe Tomaselli for breakfast. Got some side-eye from the stern waiter when I ordered Weisswurst. Pretty sure he thought: Does she know what she’s ordering?? Yes. Yes, I do. And I ate every bite.

Hohensalzburg Castle/Fortress today – the highest point in Salzburg. You have the option to walk up the mountain, but a) I’ve already done that, twice, and b) taking the funicular would significantly reduce the potential for sweating. I don’t love a funicular – it’s just a crowded cube full of strangers, and the conductor guy and I always have wildly different ideas on how many people should fit into a funicular car. But funicular > sweating.

Pit stop for torte (cake) and a Radler (half lemonade, half beer). Did some epic people watching. The women in this town are super put together. The men . . . are wearing jorts. PSA: jorts do not look good on anyone.

Found a small liquor store that specializes in Austrian schnaps. Super knowledgeable proprietor. Bought some fantastic bottles to add to my collection.

Went by a niche perfume store. I found a bottle I liked, and agreed to let the lady spritz me so I could see how the perfume wore on me. Her idea of a spritz was my idea of a bath, so I am walking down wind of everyone this afternoon.

Walked through the St. Peter’s cemetery and catacombs, which were, naturally, on the TOP of the building. I climbed most of the way up, and then came face to face with a section of impending doom-stairs. Nope. I’ll wait and let you tell me about all the dead people you saw.

Walked through Salzburg Cathedral, which dates back to 774. Incredible inside. European cathedrals are always a marvel. Ken disappointed because there was no option to climb the bell tower. But some cool historical pics of the damage to the dome during WWII.

The Oldest Restaurant in the World

Had dinner at St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, is (allegedly) the oldest restaurant in the world, circa 803. So, it’s white asparagus (spargl) season in Austria right now. My entire dinner was asparagus. Delicious. We were told Mozart ate here. Haydee and I can attest to this because we ran into Mozart on our way to the bathroom. He’s very charming.

A wunderbar day exploring Salzburg!

Prost!

  1. Am a bit jealous – love the look of the Weisswurst and could ‘kill’ for the white asparagus quite scarce Down Under! Hope the perfume has worn off . . . lovely photos of you all tho’ am not sure about Mozart 🙂 !!!
