Zombie Day in Munich & Salzburg: Planes, Trains & Friends

It’s Zombie Day! Weโ€™re traveling with our good friends, Haydee and Doug, this week. Reminder of one of my favorite Hemingway quotes: โ€œNever go on trips with anyone you do not love.โ€ We love these people to our core. โค๏ธ Haydee picked up a new country today with Germany, and Doug picked up Austria. Ken and I are in mostly familiar territory.

Next: Alles Gute zum Geburtstag (Happy Birthday) to Ken!!

I slept exactly 4 minutes on the plane. Other people snored their way across the Atlantic. Iโ€™m an absolute delight on zero sleep, so trying my best to be nice. Have reminded Ken we shouldnโ€™t add hungry to my already fragile disposition.

Navigating the German train system is always a super fun adventure. They generally run on time (a plus), and operate on the honor system. But there are rules. The Germans love rules. The penalty for riding without a ticket is severe. And while Iโ€™ve never been asked for my ticket on a train in Germany, Iโ€™m a rule follower. Tickets, check.

Everyone was getting hungry, so first order of business: leberkรคse semmel and a Fanta (had to settle for orange because they didn’t have lemon), and then pastries, at the train station. Everyone agreed train station food in Germany is delicious.

Finally got to our Airbnb in Salzburg, which is located on a quaint cobblestone street not accessible by cars. So, we had to maneuver all of our bags up the cobblestone street, which immediately made it less quaint.

Had an absurdly early (for Europeans) dinner tonight. Schnitzel and beers all around. Ken even got a birthday shot of schnaps.

We all made a pact: no posted pictures of us today because weโ€™re all looking less than fresh.

Made it through Zombie Day, but cannot keep my eyes open anymore.

Guten nacht.

Prost!

  1. oh yum! I went with my mother to France when I was 18 and remember a train station sandwich that was out of this world. And a beer called Champineulle. Something like that. Not sure if itโ€™s still around. Iโ€™m so jealous!!!

  2. Na, ich hoffe Sie haben gut geschlafen :)! And a ‘Happy Birthday’ after the event! Yes, you are in very well-known territory for me also. And I DO remember about Salzburg’s narrow streets ’cause have been caught up there myself – we usually stayed at the delightful ‘Goldener Hirsch’. Am looking forwards to the explorations to come . . .
