🇫🇷 Exploring Avignon: Michelin-Star Dining, Historic Sites & Hidden Gems in the Heart of Provence

Today, we’re exploring Avignon – the beautiful 14th century walled city of Provence.

Last night: Required everyone to assemble (without grumbling) for a family picture.

Walked from our apartment to dinner, and snapped this adorable picture of my parents. Ate an absurdly decadent, completely over-the-top, 19-course dinner (they called it 4 “sequences”, but it was 19 courses) at the Michelin star restaurant, La Mirande. Got to meet/briefly observe Chef Florent Pietravalle in action.

Today: Visited the 13th century Palace of the Popes, which was the seat of the papacy from 1309-1377, while the Catholic church sorted out its family drama. Ken bonded with the gargoyles. I was reminded that Europe is a continent of stairs. Got thirsty from all the stair-stepping, so stopped at a cafe and had a beer. Browsed some street art. Provence is famous for its soap, so we peeked in at one of the many (many!) soap stores. Ken found his signature scent.

Stopped in at a wine spirits store, Le Vin Devant Soi, on our way back to the apartment. Learned all about French spirits from the delightful proprietor. Bought this super unique bottle, which is a blend of Poire Williams and French Martinique rum. Dad found a bottle (or three) of marc, which is a spirit distilled from the grape pomace (skins, stems, seeds and pulp) left over after winemaking. It’s the French equivalent of the Italian grappa, which btw, I cannot stand.

What a great day exploring Avignon! Now sitting outside in the beautiful garden at our apartment, getting ready to open a bottle of Provence Rosé and . . . relax.
